The CIB was established as a unit of Directorate of Criminal Investigations in 1999. the core function is to collect and provision of criminal  intelligence.     


  1. To oversee all matters related to criminal intelligence
  2. To evaluate analyze and disseminate criminal intelligence received from the fields
  3. The safeguarding, storage and retrieval of criminal data from unit data bank
  4. To facilitate the Kenya police service in intelligence led policing strategy
  5. To facilitate investigations with relevant intelligence in criminal investigations
  6. To facilitate the Kenya police service in its pro-active strategy in crime prevention and detection
  7. To act as the liaison office for the police service and other law enforcement and intelligence agencies both local and international
  8. To carry out any other duties as directed by the director of criminal investigations

Other functions include:

  1. Analysis of Criminal Intelligence
  2. Dissemination of intelligence to field officers
  3. Management of criminal database profile and
  4. Any other duties assigned by Director General
