It exists to provide Kenya with prompt mitigation of explosive and other similar hazards, for a safe environment in promoting innovation and technology in agriculture and trade.

FUNCTIONS
- Mitigate and investigate all cases related to explosives and hazardous materials.
- Carry out explosive ordinance disposal operations.
- Provide explosive sweeps to venues and areas visited by VIPs and other areas as need be.
- Attend to bomb threats / scares.
- Conduct post blast investigation.
- Providing security to heads of state and other dignitaries
- Investigations of all explosive/explosive incidents.
- Gathering and disseminating explosive intelligence to other law enforcement agencies locally and internationally.
- Training of officers in explosives counter measures.
- Educating and sensitizing the public of the management of bomb threats.
- Protection of airports, ports and railways.
- Collecting post blast substances and forwarding to government chemist for molecule analysis.
- Detection and prevention of illegal explosive incidents
- Apprehension and prosecution of explosive offenders
- Disposing and detonating all unexploded bombs (UXB), grenades, motors and other components of explosive materials

- Never rush to the scene as there could be a secondary device which could be more devastating than the first one.
- Try to observe for any suspicious character photographing video taking the scene or celebrating the incident
- If you can see a bomb, a bomb is also seeing you therefore run away from it
- If you don’t have any role to play please stay away as far as possible
- Leave the scene to the expert alone and anything found at the scene if you are not an expert
- Maintain scene integrity and never contaminate for evidence collection.
- All first responders if not bomb experts should cordon the scene until more qualified person arrives and takes over.
